Active Carbon is a world standard for purifying potable water. What Is Drinking Water Treatment Activated Carbon?

Active Carbon in Potable Water Treatment is a process in which Particulate (GAC), Dust (PAC), and Specialized Active Carbon are applied in a municipal wastewater treatment facility, a distributed water distribution system, as well as a point of use filter equipment for removal of chemical contamination, flavour and odour, as well as controlled pollution from the source water prior to its delivery to the consumer.

Active carbon has been a key element in the treatment of potable water for decades, and it is becoming increasingly important as the problem of groundwater quality becomes more acute. The world’s surface and ground water is under increasing pressure from the agriculture run-off with pesticides and nitrates, the waste of sewage, the pollution of industry, and the natural flavour and odour of the natural world – such as Geosmin and 2-Methylisoborol (MIB) – which render the treated water unpalatable despite its microbiological safety. At the same time, regulators such as the U.S. EPA, European Commission, and the National Drinking Water Administration have been steadily reducing MCLs for a growing range of chemicals — the latest one that has set legally binding limits at parts per billion for PFAS. Specific Use Scenarios — Drinking Water Treatment Activated Carbon

Municipal Drinking Water Plant GAC Filtration

Granular ACF is mounted as a special processing phase in a municipal wastewater treatment facility — usually located following coagulation-settling, sand-filtering — in which the source water is transported via a GAC deep stationary bed which absorbs dissolved organic matter, chlorine, disinfectant by-product precursors, pesticides, and flavour and odour compounds prior to its entry into the distribution system. The GAC contactor is constantly running at a high velocity and is regularly backwashed to eliminate the accumulated solids, while the spent carbon is removed for off-site heat activation and operation.

Powdered Activated Carbon Dosing for Emergency and Seasonal Treatment

The use of PAC is a flexible, quick-response solution to the problem of seasonal flavour and odour due to algae blooms, farm run-off, or accidental pollution of the source. PAC is injected directly into a primary flow or a processing tank that is located upstream of an existing filter phase, absorbing geosmin, MIB, pesticides, and other pollutants with no special infrastructure — allowing utilities to increase or decrease their processing strength in real-time with seasonal fluctuations in the source water quality.

PFAS Removal from Municipal Water Supplies

The PAC is the largest installation and regulated technique for removing PFAS from urban potable water, and GAC contactors that can lower PFOA, PFOS and associated long chain PFAS compounds to less than the parts per billion MCLs currently implemented by the U.S. EPA and increasingly accepted by more and more countries. Utilities that are subject to a PFAS compliance requirement deploy GAC contactors either in serial or parallel configurations to reach a desired Empty Bed Contact Time (EBCT) to be lower than the detection threshold for the purpose of removing PFAS.

Dechlorination and Disinfection Byproduct Control

Because of its long term effects on the health of the environment, chlorine and chloramines are combined with the naturally occurring organic compounds in the source water to produce THMs, HAAs, and other disinfectant by-products. Active Carbon – in GAC filtration and PAC dosage forms – offers a high efficiency of depuration and elimination of DBP precursors, which decreases the generation potential of controlled sterilization by-products and enhances the taste and beauty of final potable water supplied via a distributor.
