What Is Titanium Dioxide Plastic?
Titania (TiO₂) is one of the main functions of the world’s plastics industry, mainly used as a white dye and UV stabilizing agent for a wide variety of polymer systems and final use. It goes far more than simply coloring -TiO₂ has significantly improved the optics, durability and machining properties of the plastic, which has become an integral part of a modern plastic formula.
In plastics, titanium dioxide is added in a mixture or a master batch process, in which it is evenly distributed across the polymer substrate to provide uniform brightness, transparency, and optical stability. Both the rutile and the anatase type are widely applied in the plastics. Rutile is the dominant one because of its excellent UV-resistant properties and excellent refraction. Anatase grade finds application in specific interior or fiber applications where extreme weatherability is less critical.
TiO₂ can be used in almost all of the main thermoplastic and thermosetting polymeric systems – PE, PP, PVC, ABS, nylon and polyesters – which are widely used in packaging, building, automobile, consumer and fibre industries.
